How can we help those suffer from mental health issues around us?

Mental health issues are undoubtedly sensitive points and talking about them is the same as fighting a battle for those who are suffering through it. While we think a person is momentarily sad, they may be victims of severe mental health issues which are internally destroying their spirit. As they say, never judge a book by its cover, similarly, we should never impose our view on a person’s condition. Thus, today we shall get to know some ways in which we can lay out our assistance to those who may be seeking help out but are too hesitant in the fear of judgement.

The first step which we must follow is, identifying and reassuring signs that may be visible. The signs of mental health issues may be varying but some basic ones always revolve around the corner and pinning them down is indeed crucial. Whenever some odd behaviour is exhibited, for reassurance consulting an experienced individual or taking aid from reliable internet sources is viable. This way we can move past the first stage of helping people come out of this catastrophic cycle. Following the identification stage, comes the time to directly lay out our support. Avoid confrontation, as sudden challenges often traumatize the person rather than helping them come out of the stigma. Instead, use a friendly approach. Relevant wording can help us gain the proper pointers we require to channel proper help to these people.

As we are in the process of channelling help, consent is certainly an important issue. We must take permission from the person when we are trying to connect them with counsellors or doctors. If we randomly throw them before a counsellor, as helpful as it is supposed to be, it can be mentally damaging initially as the victim may feel cornered. Thus why, before moving on with the initiative, it is best if we ask them if they would be interested in being communicated to a helpline.

Lastly, being a non-judgmental listener can be of extreme support. Often people only need someone to speak their minds out to. As socially responsible individuals we can lend our ears to those in dire need and listen to their concerns without stereotyping or being assessing. We must not be selfish when we do so and surround our focus on their needs for a speedy recovery of their mind and health. If we follow just a few steps, our actions can change someone’s future. There is no harm in doing that, only good shall await us.
